Learn About the 2022 Primary Election

When is the next Election?

The next election is the  General Election November 8, 2022.

What is a Primary Election?

In a general election, voters help decide which political party candidates’ names will be on everyone’s ballot in November. Your vote in a primary  is especially important when there are more candidates running for an office than can hold that office—a contested race—because you help decide which candidates will move on to the General Election.

Who Can Vote in a Primary Election?

All registered voters can vote in Illinois primaries. You don’t have to be a member of a political party. However, in Illinois, you will need to choose either a Democratic or Republican primary ballot when you vote.  In the pirmary, you’ll be voting only for that party’s candidates.

What Offices Will Be in the Primary Election?

There are two kinds of races in the primary.  Some are contested--there are more candidates who want te office than available spots. In contested races, you have a choice of who to select. If there is only one candidate for the available office/spot, then the race is uncontested.  You'll see only one name on the ballot for that office.
Contested races in the June 28 Primary Election  - These are the races where you have a choice of candidates.
  • U.S. Senate nominee for Republican Party
  • U.S. House of Representatives - (depends on where you live and your party ballot selection)
                  IL-2 Republican , IL-13 Republican , IL-13 Democratic, IL -15 Republican
  • Illinois Governor
  • Illinois Secretary of State
  • Illinois Attorney General
  • Champaign County Sheriff nominee for Republican Party
Uncontested races in the June 28 Primary Election - Many of the uncontested races will be contested in the November 8 election when Republican and Democratic candidates face off.
  • Illinois Treasurer
  • Illinois Comptroller
  • Illinois Legislature (depends on where you live and your party ballot selection)
State Senate IL-52, State Senate IL-51
                  State Assembly IL-101, IL-102, IL-103, IL-104
  • Regional Superintendent of Schools
  • Champaign County Judicial 6th Circuit Judical
  • Champaign County Exective
  • Champaign County Clerk and Recorder
  • Chammpaign County Treasurer

Who Are the Candidates in the Primary Election?

The chart below shows all the candidates in the Primary Election. Two things to notice about this big chart:
  1. The yellow shaded cells  are  contested races. These are the races in which you have a choice of candidates.
  2. Some of the contested races depend on where you live:
  • US House of Representatives (IL representative to Congress) IL-2, IL-13, IL-15
  • Illinois State Senate IL-52 and IL-51

Who Will Be on My Ballot When I Vote?

One way to prepare to vote is to get a copy of your sample ballot. Sample ballots are specific to your home location. The ballot you request will list all the candidates you can vote for in the Primary Election on June 28, 2022.

How?  The Champaign County Clerk's website has a
My Sample Ballot page.  On this page, you will  be asked to provide either the last 4 digits of your Social Security number or your complete Illinois driver's license/state ID number. Once you fill out this information, you will see a lot of information useful to voting, including your sample ballot for the Primary Election. You can download one party's sample ballot or both sample ballots.
