Contact Your Government Officials
They'll Listen to You - Because You Can Vote!
You have more persuasive ability to influence national, state, and local officials than any lobbyist or outside group. Why? Because you have the home field advantage--you vote for them!
For that reason, the best use of your time is to contact YOUR officials, those who represent YOU. Officials in other districts or states won’t pay attention to people who can’t vote for them. |

A Phone Call Is Best for Federal and State Officials
How to call
1. Before you call, take some time to research the issue you’re concerned about.
2. Decide the main message you want to share. Do you want the official to vote a certain way or do you just want express an opinion about an issue? 3. If it’s about legislation, say what the topic is when you call. If you know the bill number or the bill title, that’s super but not necessary. The staffer will understand. 4. Don’t be nervous. You’ll be talking with a staffer or an answering machine, not the politician. Be brief, courteous, and reasonable. And---it's great to contact your officials to thank them too! 5. Call the official’s office. For legislation it’s best to call the DC office; if you can’t get through, then call their local office. It’s fine to email if you can't get through or have a longer message to share. TIP: Put the contact information for each of your officials in your phone under O for official or G for government. That way you’ll have all the officials who represent you listed in one place. |

Who To Contact
Officials who are elected as representing a political party have either a D (Democratic) or R (Republican) after their names. You can also find phone numbers for each official's offices on their website, but we've listed the phone numbers here so you can access them easily.

Support or Oppose Illinois Legislation Through Witness Slips
The Illinois League of Women Voters often asks its members to take action supporting or opposing a bill being considered by the Illinois General Assembly by submitting witness slips. We've provided information about witness slips and how to complete them here.
