Immigrant Support Resources - Champaign County
|
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" -Emma Lazarus November 2, 1883 |
Like many Illinois counties, Champaign County is home to many people who were born in other countries. Some have been here for a long time; others are recent arrivals. Many organizations and programs in our county provide resources and support for immigrants and refugees as they become accustomed to being in this country and in Champaign County.
In January 2026 representatives from the New American Welcome Center, Urbana Public Schools, Immigrant Services of Champaign-Urbana, and The Refugee Center joined together for a panel discussion on issues and concerns facing immigrants and refugees in our county, and an overview of some of the many services and programs available for support. Panelists also described ways allies and volunteers could best help. This webpage provides short summaries of their programs, the services each offers, and contact information to learn more.
The video of this LWVCC Keeping It Local program will be available on our League’s YouTube site.
