Each year Welcoming Week provides an opportunity to celebrate our sense of belonging to our community--whether we grew up here, recently immigrated, "never planned to stay this long," or anywhere in between. Join community friends and partners at free, family-centered events through September 17. Event links can be found on the Welcoming Week page or on Facebook @ynawc. Welcoming Week has something for everyone: celebrations, presentations, ceremonies, game nights, nature walks, and more. Welcoming Week celebrates the growing movement of inclusive communities that fully embrace immigrants and their contributions to the social fabric of our country.
LWVCC is a collaborating partner with the New American Welcome Center and many other local organizations in this celebration. LWVCC volunteers had a table at the September 8 kick-off for the week. On August 23, 2023, 10:00 am - 1:30 pm, Parkland College held an event open to all new and continuing students, faculty, and staff. At the LWVCC table, people were able to register to vote, check voter registration, gain information about the March 19, 2024 primary election or learn more about the League of Women Voters of Champaign County.
On Thursday, July13, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, Naturalization Ceremony at Parkland College. It's the first US Naturalization Ceremony in some time to be held here. About 100 people will take the oath to become US citizens. LWVCC has been invited to participate and help register new citizens to vote. Those who participated the last time (2019) know how uplifting it is to be involved as people from all over the world become US citizens.
LWVCC is one o the sponsors of this Braver Angels event. The notice below was adapted from the announcement by Braver Angels of IL at this site. Wednesday, June 28, 2023, Rantoul High School, 5:30 – 7:30 PM, Light Meal Provided . Space is limited, so please fill out this interest form if you would like to participate. Background: Are you concerned about the extreme polarization and hyper-partisanship that currently exists, nationally, in Springfield, and even here in Champaign County?
Do you wish that instead of fighting, our leaders would work together on the issues that matter most to their constituents? Such as helping grow the local economy and making sure everyone has the skills and support they need to find good jobs and provide for their families? Two of your elected officials, Sen. Faraci (a Democrat) and Rep. Marron (a Republican) want to do just that, and they want YOU to be part of the conversation. Sen. Faraci and Rep. Marron will be participating in a Constituent Conversation sponsored by the Braver Angels of East-Central Illinois, part of a national nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing together people from different political viewpoints for civil and respectful discussions. This conversation will start with polarization/hyper-partisanship in politics and then focus on workforce development (training/education, hiring & staffing, opportunities & barriers, etc.) in Rantoul and northern Champaign County. The goals of the Conversation are: 1) To better understand our fellow citizens beyond our political differences 2) To give Sen. Faraci and Rep. Marron the opportunity to learn your thoughts and concerns on these issues 3) To provide you, the constituents, the experience of having direct communication with two local elected state officials from both parties LWVCC volunteers will be at the Farmer's Market at Lincoln Square on Saturday June 17 and Saturday July 15 to talk with people about the League, voting and more. Stop by to visit us there.

In this program, three League Student Ambassadors talked about their experiences and challenges. League Student Ambassadors are a team of high school students – all League members - who help local students register to vote. This year 12 Student Ambassadors were part of the team. Their work and commitment were exemplary in our local high schools of Champaign Central, Urbana, Uni High, and Unity. Under the excellent leadership of League members Rhonda Kirts and Lynda Minor, this spring alone they helped register more than 130 students to vote for the first time.
