Takeaways from September's Keeping it Local

Election Security in Illinois:
From Registration Through Ballot Counting

was the timely topic of the League’s September 23 Keeping It Local program. Early voting for the Midterm General Election started the next day, which was also the first day mail ballots could be sent to those requesting them. Illinois State Board of Elections’ Public Information Officer Matt Dietrich and Election Specialist Jessy Hersey shared information about our state’s election security system, including cybersecurity, voter roll maintenance, and public voting equipment testing used to confirm accurate vote counting.

Key takeaways:

1. It’s easy for all eligible citizens to register and to vote in Illinois.
2. Voting is a simple process, and it’s an experience we have in common. Help your friends, neighbors, and family members to learn about voting so they can take advantage of their right to vote.
3. Be careful what you see and hear on social media and elsewhere. Check things out! The State Board of Elections and local election authorities are your go-to sources for accurate, factual information.
4. Learn the hows and whys—ask questions about voting so you understand how the system works in Illinois. Ask questions of the candidates on your ballot to learn more about them and their priorities. Information is our strength.
