On November 1st, League members of Champaign County got to see their months of hard work come to fruition. After months of work, the WILL-TV studio and WCIA-TV hosted a debate by the Illinois Public Media sponsored by the League of Women voters of Illinois to bring together the 3 candidates for Illinois’ newly redistricted 13th District. The position for the 13th District opened up after long term representative Tim Johnson gave up the position earlier this year. The 3 candidates were Republican Rodney Davis of Taylorville, Democrat David Gill of Bloomington, and Independent John Hartman of Edwardsville. The debate was moderated before a live studio audience starting at 7 PM. It was mediated by WILL-TV newsperson Jim Meadow. Additional questions came from Dave Benton, WCIA-TV 3 news anchor; Tom Kacich, Champaign New-Gazette columnist; Robert Lowe, University of Illinois broadcast journalism student, and Amanda Vinicky, Statehouse Bureau chief. Questions ranged from the candidates’ stance on the economy, health care, educational reform, and the role of the government in state politics.
