On November 8th, the monthly League general meeting topic was the issue of water quality control in Illinois, with a specific focus on the Prairie Rivers Network organization here in Champaign. Established in 1967 by Bruce and Patricia Hannon, this non for-profit organization has worked throughout the decades to ensure how national laws, such as the Clean Water Act, are enforced correctly to protect our local rivers and environment. The PRN, though based in Champaign, has a statewide focus on water issues concerning the efficient implementation of effective water health policies.
Traci Barkley was the PRN speaker at the meeting and she discussed the Clean Water Act of 1970 and how that has subsequently resulted in the PRN's creation of the Healthy Stream Flow an Habitat Protection Program as well as the River Stewardship and Awareness Program. Ms. Barkley also touched upon the water pollution issues, specifically coal pollution of our natural streams.
