Spotlight on Student Ambassadors
Eliza Terziev, University Lab High School & Amari Johnson Urbana High School
What drew you to apply to be a Student Ambassador?
Eliza: After self-studying for AP Government and taking US History last year, I realized I have a strong interest in American Government and the social sciences more broadly. The Student Ambassador position seemed the perfect way to see some of the processes of government played out in person.
Amari: I was drawn to apply to be a Student Ambassador because I wanted to make a difference in my community and do more at my High School.
What did you know about the League of Women Voters before you applied?
Eliza: I didn't know very much at all. The first I heard of it was when I was applying to be a Student Ambassador.
Amari: I didn't know about the League of Women Voters before I applied.
Since becoming a Student Ambassador, what have you learned or enjoyed so far?
Eliza: I've loved speaking with and learning from the senior members.
Amari: I have learned more about why it is important to vote and that every vote counts. I learned a lot about the League of Women Voters and what they do in our community. I also learned that high school students can become election judges and serve on election day.
What is a fun fact about you?
Eliza: I'm looking to study Economics in college.
Amari: I own my own business (a t-shirt company) and won $5,000 in a pitch contest (like Shark Tank) when I was in 8th grade competing against all High School students.
What would you want to accomplish as a Student Ambassador?
Eliza: Planning and executing a voting drive with my fellow Uni High ambassadors is a big goal of mine.
Amari: I would like to spread the word about the importance of voting to young people and that our voices count as well and why you should register to vote and vote as soon as you are old enough. I also want people to know that it is important to vote in local elections and not just for the presidential race.
What League activities have you or will you be participating in?
Eliza: I have attended meetings to plan a voting drive and learn about voting registration.
Amari: I plan to participate in the book club and work as an election judge for the next election.

Safa Shakir, University Lab High School & Ivy Wright,
Unity High School
What drew you to apply to be a Student Ambassador?
Safa: Over the years, my interest in government and politics has increased significantly, and I saw this as a good opportunity to further that interest. I also thought that it was a great chance to get involved in our community.
Ivy: What drew me to become a Student Ambassador is the idea of providing an opportunity for people my age to learn about the intimidating process of voting in an easy, accessible way.
What did you know about the League of Women Voters before you applied?
Safa: Honestly, I knew little about the League of Women Voters at first, but after looking through the website and doing some research, it seemed like a group involved in educating others about voting and its importance.
Ivy: To be honest, I knew nothing of the League of Women Voters until I was told about it by my Civics teacher.
Since becoming a Student Ambassador, what have you learned or enjoyed so far?
Safa: One thing that I found particularly interesting was going through and filling out the Voter Registration Form. Just learning how to go through the process was a great experience. I’ve also really enjoyed getting to know everyone part of the program better.
Ivy: I have enjoyed working one-on-one with Rhonda Kirts planning for my voter registration event the most, but the whole process of learning with other peers who are just as passionate as I am, is really cool. I have learned a lot about the voting process and registering to vote myself.
What is a fun fact about you?
Safa: I hope to go into law someday!
Ivy: A fun fact about me is that clouds are my favorite thing on the planet. They are so pretty.
What would you want to accomplish as a student ambassador?
Safa: With the knowledge I gain, I hope to be able to assist my friends and classmates with voter registration forms as well as prepare myself for when I can vote.
Ivy: I would like to get as many peers to register to vote as possible. That would be pretty cool.
What League activities have you or will you be participating in?
Safa: Currently, I plan on participating in the book club and hosting a voter registration event.
Ivy: I plan to participate in the League's book club and host my own voter registration event.
