Help with Voter Education
1. WHY VOTE? Challenge Videos are Here! - In June, the League sponsored a challenge for high-school-aged students to create short videos encouraging their peers to vote. The Challenge concluded on July 12 and the videos will be posted on the League's Youtube channel from August through October. Check out this page for details. The Challenge was organized by the Youth Outreach & Civic Engagement (YOCE) team.
2. High School Mock Elections - Since 2010, the Champaign League of Women Voters has held mock elections in local high schools. Mock elections are a good way to inspire our youth's interest in elections. Since this is an national election year, this is a good time to volunteer for this effort. Mock elections are coordinated with the Champaign County Clerk's office. Mock elections are organized by the Youth Outreach & Civic Engagement team.
Update: This year, the County Clerk is not able to offer mock election for fall 2020 given the impact of Covid19 on the few months leading up to the general election. The County Clerk's office will be focusing efforts on a safe, fair and accessible election. In addition, we do not know what school will look like in the fall nor do we know what the election itself will look like that we could “mock” the election. Essentially planning for any mock election is on hold until a future election.
3. Candidate Forums - Before each election, the League co-sponsors Candidate Forums where attendees get a chance to interact with candidates in contested races and ask them questions. See the League YouTube page to view the 2020 primary election forms held on January 30 and February 10. Candidate Forms are organized by the Candidate Forums team.
Update: : Normally the Candidate Forums are in-person events that are also recorded. In fall 2020, there are various options for holding a safe forum; the Candidate Forum team is investigating these options now. If you'd like to help with the planning and logistics of this fantastic civic service, the team is interested in talking with you. As the event draws nearer, there will also be opportunities for logistical help with the events. Send a note to [email protected] with "Candidate Forums" in the subject line.
4. Get Out The Vote (GOTV) - The League helps make the community aware of upcoming elections and the importance of voting. Examples include posting informational flyers. GOTV activities are organized by the Voter Education team.
Update: : The Voter Education team will be preparing materials as usual for increasing local awareness of election. If you'd like to help, send an email to [email protected] with "I want to help GOTV Fall 2020" in the subject area.
