Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons said that the tabulating of mail ballots will resume Monday because of Veterans’ Day. Only the race for the 6th Circuit judgeship remains too close to call. The number of mail ballots yet to be counted could grow if more are postmarked by election day arrive by Nov. 22.

The Champaign County Clerk and Recorder’s office urged patience as “connectivity issues and server performance” slowed down voting at some polling locations on election day. The Clerk attributed the problems to cyber attacks on the network and servers.
Champaign County is one of three out of 108 election jurisdictions in the state where voters can vote at any polling place. A “custom ballot” is printed out on the spot for each voter, which might also have been a factor in the delays at some locations. After a tax hike proposal designed to alleviate overcrowding in Mahomet-Seymour public schools failed by a 60 to 40 percent margin, school officials will reflect how to proceed. The measure would have raised taxes by $59.4 million to build a new junior high school. “The significant overcrowding and substandard conditions at our junior high will continue to be critical issues that we will work with our community to address,” said school board President Max McComb.

The Mahomet-Seymour School Referendum asks voters to approve an increase in the property tax in order to build a new junior high school to alleviate overcrowding in the current school. In this article, four residents said how they would vote and why. Two said they would vote for it, saying that the need is real and Mahomet would protect the quality of its schools. It is better to pay now rather than pay more later on to address the problem. Two voters said they would vote against, saying that the timing is not right for a tax hike now. There is no comprehensive development plan.
