Alleged Cyber Attacks: Champaign County Alone on Polling Place Issues

11/10/2022

This item is adapted from a News-Gazette article  by Debra Pressey and Jeff D’Alessio on November 9, 2022. For more information read the full article  at the News-Gazette, page A1.
The Champaign County Clerk and Recorder’s office urged patience as “connectivity issues and server performance” slowed down voting at some polling locations on election day. The Clerk attributed the problems to cyber attacks on the network and servers.

Champaign County is one of three out of 108 election jurisdictions in the state where voters can vote at any polling place. A “custom ballot” is printed out on the spot for each voter, which might also have been a factor in the delays at some locations.

11/10/2022

This item was adapted from a News-Gazette article by Dave Hinton on November 10, 2022. For full details, see the News-Gazette story.
After a tax hike proposal designed to alleviate overcrowding in Mahomet-Seymour public schools failed by a 60 to 40 percent margin, school officials will reflect how to proceed. The measure would have raised taxes by $59.4 million to build a new junior high school. “The significant overcrowding and substandard conditions at our junior high will continue to be critical issues that we will work with our community to address,” said school board President Max McComb.

The judge said there was a factual dispute over whether ballots an election judge saw … at the Brookens Administrative Center were official or unofficial test ballots. The judge will hold another hearing Monday on the dispute.”

News-Gazette QAs with County Board Candidates in Districts 4 & 5

11/6/2022

The News-Gazette.com has been publishing one-on-one Question & Answers with 22 incumbents and contenders in Tuesday's General Election races.   Among the Q&As were the four Republicans and four Democrats running for four Champaign County Board seats in Districts 4 and 5.  Visit this page at the News-Gazette for more on the QA series.
The District 4 and 5 candidates were asked the following questions:
  • A good chunk of the population probably couldn’t name the district they live in and their representative on the county board. What’s your best argument for why they should care about this election, and the board itself? Why do you want this role, at this time?
  • What are three adjectives to describe the kind of representative voters
 would get in you?
  • These are hyper-partisan times we live in, which has been evident in county board meetings on several occasions. Is it possible for members of
the two parties to work together? Is it necessary?
  • If elected, what issue would you make priority No. 1 — and how would you
 go about solving it?
  • Why are you the best person for the job?

The candidates' answers to more of the six questions posed are accessible under the Election 2022 tab on the News-Gazette's website (https://www.news-gazette.com/election/2022/).

Mahomet-Seymour School Referendum: Voters For, Against Tax Increase Reveal Their Reasons

11/6/2022

This item summarizes an article in the News-Gazette on Sunday, November 6, 2022 by Dave Hinton. Read the full article at the News-Gazette.
The Mahomet-Seymour School Referendum asks voters to approve an increase in the property tax in order to build a new junior high school to alleviate overcrowding in the current school.

In this article, four residents  said how they would vote and why. Two said they would vote for it, saying that the need is real and Mahomet would protect the quality of its schools. It is better to pay now rather than pay more later on to address the problem. Two voters said they would vote against, saying that the timing is not right for a tax hike now. There is no comprehensive development plan. The current school building is not in such bad shape that it could not be upgraded rather than build a new school

Partisan Publication Hits Area Mailboxes: Local Coverage

11/3/2022

The News-Gazette

Picture
On November 3, The News-Gazette published this article by  Ethan Simmons.  See this News-Gazette link for more details.
A publication that presents as a regular newspaper has been appearing locally. The Chambana Sun runs overwhelmingly partisan far-right-leaning articles though it does not disclose its right-wing connections. Near identical editions under different mastheads appear in other Illinois communities.

Illinois Public Media

On September 27, 2022, Brian Mackey, host of The 21st Show, Illinois Public Media, discussed such publications, called ‘pink slime,’ with scholars and journalists: Alisa Kaplan, Executive Director, Reform for Illinois; Ryan Zickgraf, Freelance Journalist; and Melita Garza, Associate Professor, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Media. Here's a link to the story.  “Why are ‘pink slime’ papers in your mailbox?”

National Public Radio

Picture

On October 31, 2022 NPR published an article and audio by David Folkenflik about "zombie papers". Full story is here.
The article, titled "Right-wing 'zombie' papers attack Illinois Democrats ahead of elections," begins with:

"Since late summer, many Illinois residents have been receiving newspapers that they haven't paid for nor, in many cases, even heard of. Each paper bears a clear-cut tagline: Real data, real news. And each publication that shows up in driveways and mailboxes carries a partisan punch that's blatant, but not formally disclosed."
