Conversations with Elected Officials: Webinar June 15

On June 15, 6:30 pm, LWVCC and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) presented a webinar with recently elected council members: Grace Wilken, Urbana Ward 6, Chaundra Bishop, Urbana Ward 8, and Daniel Iniguez, Champaign District 3.

Council members shared information about running for office, discussed how their roles have developed once in office, and responded to questions. Citizens shared effective strategies for contacting elected officials based on their experience. Also LWVCC Voter Ready co-chair Ann Prisland provided a last-minute primary election voting information.

From now until Election Day, June 28, 2022, ILVOTE of Champaign County, the League of Women Voters of Champaign County, Illinois Student Government, the Student Advocacy Coalition at the University of Illinois and When We All Vote of Champaign County plan to increase voter turnout by making it easy for citizens to register to vote and learn about candidates.

We want to invite you and your organization to participate in this 2022 IL Primary Election and help inform voters about elections and increase voter turnout across race, age, gender, income, and education group in every election!

The Facebook event suggests that groups can make pledges to vote (and sharing pictures of their members on the site). It also has information on making a plan to vote, early voting, researching candidates and helping others to get involved.

Republican Candidates for 13th Congressional District Debate on June 2

Illinois Public Media, WAND News, and the League of Women Voters of Champaign County are hosting debates between primary candidates in the 13th Congressional District. Coming up on Thursday, June 2, 7:00 pm, is the debate among the four Republican candidates. Illinois Public Media will host the debate in its Urbana studios. To hear the debate:

Television - Live on WILL-TV and WSIU-TV and at a later time on WAND News
Radio - WILL AM-580 and FM-90.9, WSIU-FM in Carbondale, and NPR Illinois (WUIS-FM) in Springfield. T
Livestream on station websites, Illinois Public Media Facebook page and YouTube Channel.

You're Invited! Help with Get-Out-The -Vote Events in June and July

The Primary Election is June 28. LWVCC teams are mobilizing to get information out to voters and encourage participation. Volunteers are needed to spread the word.

Distribute Get-Out-the-Vote flyers to Local Businesses

Flyers, directions, and a list of businesses will be provided. You choose the date and time to distribute your packet between June 1 and June 25. Can you help?Email [email protected] and put "GOTV Volunteer" in the subject line.

Share Voting and League Information at Community Events

LWVCC teams (Get Out the Vote, Voter Ready, and Youth Outreach and Civic Engagement) are organizing community events to encourage voting in the primary election. Read about the events below and click the red button to sign up. You can pick the dates, events and times that work best for you.

June 4: 5K Fun Walk/Run, 8:00 am - 11:00 am, Meadowbrook Park. Hosted by our local partner organization Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to benefit their scholarship fund and share health information with everyone who attends. We'll be shring information about voting

June 11 and June 18: Urbana Farmers’ Market, 7:30 am--12:00 noon. We’ll be sharing League information along with information about voting options.

June 25: MLK Jettie Rhodes Day,12:00 noon - 4:00 pm, King Park, rain or shine. This day is all about giving back to the community with fun, family, networking, and a diverse atmosphere. Many community groups will be represented—and there’ll be lots of stands with food and kids’ activities. All are welcome! We’ll be hosting a table and sharing League information along with encouraging early and election-day voting.
