National Voter Registration Week at Parkland College - September 28 and 29. LWVCC helped Parkland College students register to vote. National Voter Registration Day was September 28, 2021. LWVCC's YOCE team were at Parkland College on September 28 and 29, offering students the opportunity to register to vote.
Volunteers who helped were Marci Adelston-Schafer, Pat Babich-Smith, Trisha Crowley, Judy Elmore, China Huff, Murial Jones, Rhonda Kirts, Terry Maher, Diane Ore, Carol Packard, Ann Prisland, Jenny Putman, Mike Sabacinski and Paula Strong. Voter Registration 101: Helping Others - Thursday September 23, 7:00-8:15 pm. League volunteer Ann Prisland presented a refresher training session for League and community members who volunteered to register voters September 28 and 29, National Voter Registration Day, at Parkland College. Attending the refresher training were Rhonda Kirts, Lynda Minor, China Huff, Carol Packard, Paula Strong, Trisha Crowley, Jenny Putnam, and community members Diane Ore, Terry Maher, and Mike Sabacinski.
Parkland College Fine Arts Scholarship Fund Raiser - September 19. For several years the local band Candy Foster and the Shades of Blue, plus other local bands, have hosted concerts to raise money for fine arts/music scholarships at Parkland College. At this year's fund raiser, League members Rhonda Kirts, Lynda Minor, Karen Fresco (all pictured), and Ann Prisland provided voter and League information plus registration opportunities at this year's benefit concert. Over 100 attended the fundraiser at Alto Vineyards, Champaign. Sponsored by the University YMCA and multiple community organizations, Welcoming Week is an annual event.
LWVCC Book Club Tuesday, September 14, 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm. The Book Club for the League of Women Voters of Champaign County met on this date to discuss The Splendid and The Vile by Erik Larsen. Professor Schwinn clarified the potential impacts of recent Supreme Court decisions that will likely make it harder to challenge discriminatory voting laws in court and provided concrete suggestions for actions we can take to support voting rights. A frequent commenter on issues related to constitutional law and human rights, Schwinn serves as editor of the American Constitution Society Supreme Court Review, an annual publication reviewing cases and issues at the Supreme Court. He serves on the Board of Advisors for the Chicago Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society. He also works with area school teachers, students, and nonprofits on outreach and public education related to the Constitution. Forty-one people registered; 31 attended. Of the attendees, 19 were League members. Thanks to League members Karen Fresco and Ann Prisland for their participation in this collaborative series of programs. City of Champaign Lovin’ U CampaignTour September 1, 6:00 pm -8:00 pm, Bristol Place Residences—Sponsored by the Neighborhood Services Department, features food, music, fun, information/resources, and fellowship. League volunteers Carol Baxter (pictured) and Ann Prlsland joined in at Bristol Place on September 1 to provide voter registration and information. This proved to be a great opportunity to "plant seeds" for future voters (see photo), as well as make face-to-face contact with neighborhood leaders for future voter registration opportunities. |
